How do I request data from social media platforms?

Before beginning with the study, you must request your data from Facebook and/or WhatsApp. Please make sure that the device you request and download your data from is only accessible by you. Additionally, we recommend you delete the downloaded data from your device after donation has been completed.

Note: The chat export function is not supported by all WhatsApp versions!

Please choose the five conversations which are most important to you (group chats are possible too). Please bear in mind that the chats can only be downloaded one after the other. Multiple selection of chats is currently not supported.

Overview of the download & donation procedure:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your smartphone.
  2. Think about which five chats are most relevant to you (e.g. close friend, partner).
  3. Pick one of the selected chats and open it.
  4. Press the button in the top right with the three dots.
  5. Select “More” to reach the option “Export chat”.
  6. Click on export “Without media” and choose a medium for data transfer of your choice (we recommend Bluetooth or a secure email provider).
  7. Start the data transfer.
  8. Repeat the steps 3-7 for all five chats.

The official documentation on how to download your data can be found here for iOS or Android.

Make a request to Facebook to download your Facebook data. After having downloaded a copy of your Facebook data, you may start participating in the study.

Overview of the download & donation procedure:

  1. Open the Facebook App on your smartphone.
  2. In the top right corner, click on “More” and choose “Settings & Privacy”.
  3. Select “Settings”, scroll down and select “Download your Information”.
  4. In the interest of data minimization, please first deselect all categories. Then, tick the fields “Post” and “Messages”.
  5. Scroll down and change the format from HTML to JSON.
  6. After creating the file, you must wait until your data is ready to be downloaded.
  7. As soon as the file is ready for download, you will receive an e-mail with a link.
  8. On your own computer, you can open the link and download the data.

The official documentation on how to download your data can be found here.

It is up to you whether to donate data from both platforms. If you decide to donate data from only one, please choose the platform which is more significant to you. You may also limit the period covered by the donation down to six months if you so desire.
